MagSafe or USB-C: Which Should You Use to Charge Your MacBook?

On every MacBook that has MagSafe 3 (MacBook Pro from 2021 on, MacBook Air from 2022 on), MagSafe and USB-C charge the same battery through the same USB-C Power Delivery negotiation, from the same adapters. The practical differences are four: only MagSafe reaches 140W on the 16-inch Pro, MagSafe breaks away safely when the cable is snagged, USB-C occupies a data port, and the two cables wear differently. Pick per situation, not per ideology.

Is MagSafe faster than USB-C?

Only at the very top. USB-C Power Delivery before PD 3.1 tops out at 100W, so the 140W charging that the 16-inch MacBook Pro supports requires the MagSafe 3 cable path (the 140W adapter itself is a USB-C PD 3.1 adapter). On a MacBook Air or a 14-inch Pro at 96W or below, MagSafe and USB-C charge at identical speeds. What does MagSafe actually protect against?

Trip accidents and connector wear. The magnetic coupling releases when someone catches the cable, sparing both the Mac (from a fall) and the port (from lever damage). When is USB-C the better choice?
