How Many Watts Does a MacBook Charger Need?

A MacBook Air charges fine from 30W, a 14-inch MacBook Pro wants 67W to 96W, and a 16-inch MacBook Pro ships with 140W. Using fewer watts than the Mac can draw is safe but slow, and under heavy load the battery can drain while plugged in. Here is the full picture, including the number most people never see: the watts actually delivered, as opposed to the number printed on the brick.

Which wattage does Apple ship with each MacBook?

Apple currently sells USB-C power adapters at 30W, 35W (dual port), 67W, 70W, 96W, and 140W. As shipped with recent machines:

Is it safe to use a weaker charger?

Yes. USB-C Power Delivery negotiates: the Mac asks, the charger offers, and they settle on the highest level both support. A 30W phone charger will charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro; it will just do it slowly, and if the Mac is drawing more than 30W of load, the battery drains while plugged in and macOS may show “Not Charging”. Nothing is damaged; you are simply underpowered.

Is it safe to use a stronger charger?

Also yes. The Mac only draws what it needs, so a 140W adapter on a MacBook Air is fine and leaves headroom. What a bigger number cannot fix is a bad link in the chain: the negotiation settles on what the weakest part supports.

Why does the cable matter as much as the charger?

Because the cable is part of the negotiation. Charging above 60W requires a cable rated for higher current (5A), and charging at 140W requires USB-C PD 3.1 support end to end; Apple’s MagSafe 3 cable and the 140W adapter provide that pair. Plug a 140W adapter into a cheap 60W-class cable and you get 60W, silently. Old or damaged cables also degrade: a worn cable can renegotiate downward or drop power entirely, which shows up as intermittent charging.

How do you see the watts you are really getting?

macOS buries it: System Information, Power, AC Charger Information shows the negotiated wattage, but only as a snapshot, several clicks deep. Broken Charger puts that number in the menu bar live: plug in and you see, for example, 96W, or the 20W a dying cable negotiated instead. The gap between the printed rating and the delivered number is the single most useful charging fact a Mac can show you. The app also flags a charger that is delivering noticeably less than its rating, which usually means a multi-port charger is sharing its budget with another device.

Do third-party chargers work with MacBooks? Yes, any USB-C Power Delivery charger works. Certified chargers from reputable brands negotiate the same profiles as Apple’s. What matters is honest wattage and a properly rated cable.

Can I charge a MacBook with a phone charger overnight? A 20W to 30W phone charger will fill most MacBooks overnight while they sleep, since a sleeping Mac draws little. It is a legitimate travel fallback, not a daily setup.

Does wattage affect battery health? Not meaningfully within Apple’s supported range. Heat is the enemy of battery chemistry, and macOS manages charging rate and pauses when the battery runs hot regardless of adapter size.
